On Saturday, July 1, we commemorate the abolition of slavery on July 1, 1863 in the then Dutch colonies of Surinam and the Netherlands Antilles and celebrate the liberation from this. From July 1, extra attention will be paid to this throughout the country during the Remembrance Year of Slavery Past.
The commemoration and celebration in Zeeland will take place in the Abbey and at the Slavery Monument on the Balans in Middelburg. The ceremony will start at 10:30 am in the presence of, among others, Minister Schouten, the King's Commissioner in Zeeland and the mayors of Middelburg, Vlissingen and Veere.
We would like to invite you to this meeting to commemorate and celebrate this important event in our history and to reflect on the contemporary consequences of our slavery past.
In connection with the preparation and reception of the guests, it would be nice if you let us know if you are coming. You can register until Thursday 29 June at the latest.
