On April 18, singer-songwriter Jeangu Macrooy will share his personal story and ideals of freedom in the Freedom Colleges 2023.

On April 18 at 7.30 pm, Jeangu Macrooy will give a Freedom Lecture in the Citizens' Hall of the Old Town Hall in Middelburg. His story is about the commemoration of the abolition of slavery 150 years ago and the enormous impact that the Dutch slavery past still has for many people of color today.

Jeangu Macrooy (1993) is a Dutch singer and songwriter. In 2018 he performed during the Liberation Festival Zeeland in Vlissingen. He gained his fame, among other things, through his participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021 in Rotterdam. From January 2024, the singer-songwriter will star in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2014 he left Suriname for The Netherlands, where he released his debut EP 'Brave Enough'. This earned him the title 3FM Talent, in addition to a nomination for the Edison Pop as Best Newcomer. Jeangu released his debut album 'High On You' in 2017 and since then he has played at various major festivals such as Lowlands, North Sea Jazz and Eurosonic Noorderslag. At the end of 2022, Jeangu Macrooy released his third studio album 'Summer Moon'.
