Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León was born in 1951 in Mexico. He is an economist, banker, politician and entrepreneur. Between 1994 and 2000, Dr Zedillo was president of Mexico. He studied in the United States at Yale University. He then worked in Mexico at the national bank and still later went to work for the government. Dr Zedillo introduced a number of major reforms in the economic field. He was also involved in improving state finances. In 1992, Dr Zedillo became Secretary of State for Education. In that role, he implemented a major reform in primary education. After the assassination of Luis Colosio in 1993, Dr Zedillo became president of Mexico. During his reign, democracy in Mexico further developed.
Internationally, Dr Zedillo focused on the possibilities and consequences of globalisation. Globalisation is the continued exchange of people, goods, money and information around the world. After stepping down as president, Dr Zedillo became director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalisation in 2002. He served as president of the UN Financing and Development Office. He also advised the World Trade Organisation and was a member of the Club of Madrid. Later, Dr Zedillo worked as director and adivisor at organisations such as Union Pacific, Electronic Data Systems, Global Development Network, Alcoa, Procter & Gamble and Coca Cola.
