More about Yousafzai
Malala Yousafzai was born in Pakistan in 1997. The daughter of a teacher, she became known for her fight for girls to be allowed to go to school. When Malala was 11 years old, she kept a weblog on the British BBC website under another name (Gul Makai). In the form of a diary, she wrote about Taliban violence in the Swat Valley. Since 2007, girls have not been allowed to attend school there by the Taliban. Other human rights are also being violated.
While Malala was riding the bus home from school on October 9, 2012, a Taliban fighter attacked her. Malala was seriously injured by a bullet in her head and neck. Doctors successfully managed to remove the bullet from her head. The Taliban threatened to kill Malala after all. On 15 October that year, she was brought to the UK. At the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, she received further treatment. Here, Malala was also better protected from Taliban attacks. She later studied at Oxford University.
The attack changed her life. Malala fights for education and children's and women's rights. In 2013, she became the youngest person in history to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
