The independent and liberal newspaper Novaya Gazeta was founded in 1993 in Moscow, Russia. Novaya Gazeta does not allow itself to be threatened by fierce opponents, lawsuits or death threats. Journalists write honestly and after thorough investigation about corruption, domestic affairs, activities of security services, human rights violations and international news affecting Russia. With the award, the Roosevelt Institute honours all those who put their lives at risk to protect press freedom.
