In 2022 the Four Freedoms Awards ceremony took place in Middelburg. It was once again a special edition with impressive and inspiring laureates. After the ceremony, young people talked to the laureates and freedom speakers during the Four Freedoms Meet-up.
On Thursday, April 21 2022, the Four Freedoms Awards were presented to six international freedom fighters. In front of four hundred invited guests, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya thanked the Roosevelt Foundation for her International Four Freedoms Award. She took on the Belarusian dictator Lukashenko in 2020 and thus became the face of the peaceful resistance. In her acceptance speech, she indicated that she continues to believe in the power of the people. “We are the majority. The powerless became the powerful. Freedom requires making difficult, but right choices. It takes self-sacrifice. Solidarity and humanity are our superpowers.”
The other awards went to Mai Khoi Do Nguyen (Freedom of Speech Award), Lian Gogali (Freedom of Worship Award), Nice Nailantei Leng'ete (Freedom from Want Award) and the organisation ÜniKuir (Freedom from Fear Award).
