The Freedom of Worship Award was given to British Karen Armstrong in 2008. She received the award for her commitment to freedom of religion and conscience. Armstrong has become an important voice seeking understanding between religious groups. Through her teachings and writings, she made Christianity, Judaism and Islam more accessible to a wide audience. It is her goal that people can find peace in faith.

Karen Armstrong was born in 1944 in London, England. From 1962 to 1969, she was a nun in the English order 'The Community of the Holy Child Jesus'. Meanwhile, Armstrong went to study literature at Oxford University. After leaving the convent, she completed her studies. Dr Armstrong became an author and expert on religion and related issues. She wrote and presented a documentary for the BBC on the life of Paul (1983). She also advised Bill Moyers for the PBS series on religion. Dr Armstrong was one of three scholars who spoke at the first session of the United Nations on religion.
