In 2008, founder Willemijn Verloop accepted the Freedom from Fear Award on behalf of War Child Holland. The organisation received the award for its indispensable assistance to children in war zones. War Child Holland helps children build a future in peace. The award is in recognition of the important work the many volunteers do for this cause.

After Willemijn Verloop visited war-torn Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1994, she decided to found War Child Holland. This Dutch branch is linked to organisations in the UK and Canada. Funds are raised in the United States, Australia, Ireland, Sweden and Germany. War Child Holland is committed worldwide to children growing up in war and violence. Meanwhile, the organisation provides aid in 16 countries.
